On an average, around 450 people die every day in road accidents in India, while the WHO figures suggest that the numbers go up to 650. Modern vehicles with higher speeds are only adding to the risks on Indian roads, experts participating in a panel discussion on “Road Safety – Safer Parts, Safer Vehicles” said.

Mohan NS, MD and Group CEO, Suprajit sees a tectonic shift occurring in the transportation space, accompanied by fantastic infrastructure development. In this scenario, the number of variables increases, as does the variability. As a result, the automotive industry's overall complexity is changing, he adds.

With that much power and variability, it ultimately comes down to how we drive, Ramashankar Pandey, CEO, Tata Green Batteries continues. While the legislation has been in place for a long time, Pandey believes people lack in awareness. The need of the hour is a cultural revolution, a shift in mindset, and the ability to assist and alert, he says.

Manav Kapur, ED, Steelbird International, speaks about three perspectives – existing legislation or regulation, how well it is enforced, and awareness. He believes that awareness is the most powerful. “If you have the awareness, you don't need any of it,” Kapur says.

Besides, we also need to build awareness programmes, even in schools, Manish Saraf, Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Paracoat Products says. He proposes making road safety a part of the school syllabus.

However, in this day and age, technology is the biggest driver for safety, experts believe.
