Arlight, quick tip, you need to start controlling the change in direction. Even though it only lasts for a brief second it’s actually extremely important for hypertrophy to ensure that the target muscle is being stimulated effectively. For example, you’ll often see people doing calf raises where they’re kind of just bouncing out of the rep, and what this does is actually utilize your achilles tendon since the stretch reflex prevents your calf from doing any work. So in this case, it’s extremely important to pause at the bottom, and at the top, typically for 1-3 seconds, to remove any of that momentum, control the weight with your calf, and avoid your achilles getting involved. The same goes for, bench press, shoulder press, and all other exercises you perform, don’t just drop the weight hoping to generate enough momentum to spring it back up, take a second, dissipate that momentum and actually use your muscle fibers to lift the weight.
