Two Diagnostic Signs Of Drowning
1. FORMATION OF FROTH
2. CADAVERIC SPASM
FORMATION OF FROTH
When the respiratory efforts continues, the air passages and lungs are filled with water.
This water irritates and stimulates the secretion of mucous from lining membrane.
Water, Respiratory Mucous and Air are churned up due to violent respiratory efforts and produce fine froth which blocks the air passages.
CADAVERIC SPASM
As in other cases of rapid Asphyxial Deaths, convulsions or spasm of small groups of muscles takes place.
Contraction commonly occurs in the small muscles of hands and continues without going into Primary Relaxation after death. (Cadaveric Spasm)
In such spasm, the hand may close on weeds, mud or sand.
These will remain in tightly clenched hands, a proof of Ante-Mortem Drowning.
