How was ketchup once used as medicine?

Consumed throughout the world and appreciated globally, ketchup is now a staple in almost every country. But where did ketchup originate? And what were some of the strange uses of the sauce? Ketchup originated as a type of fish sauce invented in ancient China, with records of the sauce being used from 300BC, with the name Ketchup derived from the ancient Chinese name ‘koe-cheup’. Later, as a result of globalisation, Ketchup spread from country to country along trade routes, eventually reaching Britain in the 1700s. Later, in 1834, Ketchup began being used as a medicine, with Dr. John Cooke inspiring its new use, claiming ketchup could cure indigestion, diarrhoea, rheumatism and jaundice. The tomato sauce was even sold as pills, but after Cooke’s competitors created their own ketchup pills, many of which had no ketchup in, the reputation of the medicine was damaged, eventually causing the collapse of ketchup’s, short lived, medical empire.
